There are about 40 recognized cat breeds world wide today. They vary in size from 2-3 kg (5-7 lbs) up to 7-9 kgs (15-20 lbs). They also vary in hair length and coat color, personality, and care. The most popular cat breeds today are the Siamese cats, main coon cats, ragdoll cats and Persian cats.
Many of the cat breeds have their origins in a specific geographical region. These would include the Siamese cats with origins in ancient Siam, present day Thailand brought to Britain in the1880’s, Maine coon cats of the state of Maine, USA, in the 1850’s, or Russian blue from Russia, Manx from Britain, Persian from Turkey and Persia. Some cat breeds such as the Himalayan were created through careful cross breeding. The Ragdoll came to be in the 1960’s, likely from a Persian and a Birman cross. Others are the results of mutations that then were carefully bred like the Rex, Sphynx, and Scottish fold. Any of these can be the cat for you, the special fit.
Siamese cats are high energy cats, loud and extroverted. Don’t get this cat if you are gone all day, for it likes company—or else get two. They are intelligent and need toys and scratching posts for amusement. They can be territorial and bullying. They like to be groomed for the attention it brings. The Ragdolls, on the other hand, are placid, gentle, undemanding, quiet, low energy cats. Their long thick coat requires daily grooming to prevent knots and tangles. Compare Main coon cats that have a sweet nature and are very playful, and enjoy human company. They are noted for the enchanting trilling chirp they make. Their coat is semi long, waterproof and glossy, needing very little grooming. It is worthwhile to spend some time learning more about the above breeds and others before selecting the cat of your choice from the cat breeder nearest you.
